Pruning requirements for apple and pears vary from other types of tree work and require specialist knowledge and experience. Apple and pear trees require different types of pruning at different stages of their lives, at different times of year and pruning requirements also depend on the aim and specific situation of each tree.

-Restorative pruning of veteran trees

Bring old trees that have not been pruned for many years and may have stopped growing altogether back into better health, a better shape and increase productivity. Restorative pruning removes diseased and overcrowded branches and possibly unwanted height. It  should be done over a period of at least 3 years to avoid damaging or stressing the tree and to assess how the tree is responding.

-Formative pruning of young trees

Develop a strong, open, evenly spaces network of branches, (above the height of grazing livestock or machinery if necessary).

-Structural pruning

Maintain the optimal tree shape by removing overcrowded or inward growing and unbalanced growth.

-Summer pruning

Usually required following pruning or damage that takes place in winter as these can stimulate over-vigorous new growth. Summer pruning prevents over-crowding and redirects the tree’s energy into fruit production.
